Magnesium for skin

What topical magnesium is actually used for — and where the evidence is thin.

The mineral

Magnesium

Applied to skin as a salt, not swallowed

Magnesium is a mineral your body needs to run thousands of everyday processes, from nerve signals to muscle function. Most people take it in through food.

It can also be applied to the skin in the form of magnesium salts — which is what topical magnesium usually means.

In skincare and bodycare it turns up most often in products aimed at comfort and recovery: the kind of thing you reach for after a hard workout or a long day.

In practice

What it is commonly used for

  • After exercise or physical work

A calming step once the effort is done — the tradition topical magnesium comes out of.

  • For tired, tight-feeling skin

A comfort ritual for muscles and skin that feel worked, at the end of a long day.

  • As the finishing layer

A leave-on step that makes a routine feel complete rather than half-done.

Where the evidence is limited

The honest part

The claim that topical magnesium repairs or strengthens the skin barrier is not well supported. Some small studies have looked at magnesium and skin, and the results are mixed. How much magnesium actually crosses intact skin is still debated.

So we do not tell you it fixes your barrier. We say it is used for comfort and recovery, and we leave the bigger claims to better evidence.

We would rather undersell magnesium honestly than oversell it and lose your trust the first time it does not do the impossible.

What to expect

About the tingle

A tingle is normal. Pain is a signal to stop.

Magnesium salts can tingle or lightly sting on application, especially on freshly cleansed or slightly compromised skin. This is common, and it usually settles within a minute or two as the skin adjusts.

If it burns, does not ease, or leaves lasting redness — rinse it off and stop.

How we use it

In the Recovery Lotion, beside the copper peptide

In our line, magnesium sits in the Recovery Lotion — the leave-on treatment step — paired with the copper peptide GHK-Cu.

The magnesium is there for the comfort side of recovery. The peptide handles the skin side. Two actives, two jobs, one step.

What is topical magnesium used for?

Mainly comfort and recovery — the way a magnesium bath soak is used after exercise. It is a soothing, wind-down kind of ingredient rather than a treatment for a specific skin condition.

Does magnesium repair the skin barrier?

The evidence for that is limited and mixed, so we do not make the claim. We use it for comfort and recovery, which is what it has the better track record for.

Why does magnesium tingle on my skin?

Magnesium salts can produce a light tingle or sting, most often on just-cleansed or slightly compromised skin. It usually fades within a minute or two. A tingle is normal, but a burn that does not ease is a reason to rinse and stop.

How much magnesium absorbs through skin?

That is genuinely still debated — studies disagree on how much crosses intact skin. Because the science is unsettled, we describe the feel and the routine rather than promising a measured dose.

Which product has the magnesium?

The Recovery Lotion carries the magnesium, along with the copper peptide GHK-Cu. It is the leave-on treatment step. The Beauty Bar is the separate cleansing step.

Can I use magnesium every day?

Most people can use a topical magnesium leave-on daily once their skin is used to it. If you get lasting tingling or redness, cut back to a few times a week — and patch test before you start.

For external use on intact skin only. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Patch test before first use, and consult a professional if you are pregnant, nursing or taking medication.
